About
the project

The Programa Fazendo Justiça (Program Fazendo Justiça) works to address structural challenges within Brazil’s penal justice and juvenile justice systems. It began to take shape following the recognition by the Supreme Court of an unconstitutional state of affairs in the country’s prison system.

Since 2019, the Program has been coordinated by the National Council of Justice (CNJ, the Portuguese acronym) through its CNJ Department for  Monitoring and Inspection of Prison and Socio-educational Systems (DMF, the Portuguese Acronym). It is implemented in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and supported by a range of partner organizations.

The Program’s actions seek to improve entance door procedures, ensure compliance with judicial decisions in the implementation of criminal sanctions and juvenile justice measures, and strengthen exit door strategies with a focus on social inclusion.

Aligned particularly with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, which focuses on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, the Program supports the creation and improvement of products, structures, and services; promotes events, training, and capacity-building initiatives; produces knowledge products; and supports the development of CNJ regulations and normative frameworks.

Given the Program’s broad scope, its activities also contribute to the achievement of SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships and Means of Implementation).
